Mooncakes : Meritus Mandarin Peach Blossom

mooncake
Mid Autumn Festival (as some call it affectionately as Mooncake festival) is just around the corner.

Meritus Mandarin is the first to invite food bloggers for their tasting.
We must say that it was a great tasting of the mooncakes. Their theme this year is to introduce the healthier choice (less sweet) option. Thoughtful we must agree.

Their special this year is the Eight Treasures (8-yolk) with White Lotus Paste Mooncake. This humongous mooncake is not only tasty but a treat to the eyes. It is freshly baked and contains generous servings of eight egg yolks. The round shape of the 6½ inch pastry represents the family circle and is an ideal gift set for all to savour with family and friends, with special attention made to ensure it is less sweet. Indeed a good feature to have in every home during the festive period.

Not only did the tasting provide mooncakes, a special tea-pairing was also done for us. The pairing between each mooncake and tea was designed in house by the chef and the staff. For the Eight Treasures White Lotus Paste Mooncake, it is recommended to pair it with the Eight Treasure Tea. This tea has eight different ingredients and the special ingredient is the red dates. Indeed matching in taste and helps to digest the mooncake much better.

A new creation this year, the Mini Yolk Charcoal Black Sesame Paste Mooncake with Melon Seeds and Gold Dust which comes in a gift set of eight, makes for the perfect bite-size treat. The aromatic black sesame paste which complements the savoury egg yolk flavour, adds a refreshing twist to tradition. We must say that this new creation was really commendable. One of our recommended mooncakes. The texture and portioning of ingredients is of almost perfect proportions. Though this is not a less sweet version, it is still less sweet than the normal mooncakes we taste out in the market.

The Pine Nuts with White Lotus Paste Mooncake is also a less sweet version. It provides an alternative for a guilt-free festive celebration as pine nuts are high in anti-oxidants and help prevent coronary artery disease and strokes. The pine nuts were sparsed nicely throughout the mooncake, in the right proportion and not overpowering.

Mooncakes and premium tea selections are available for takeaways at Peach Blossoms from 1 August to 8 September. For reservations and enquiries, please call 6845 1118 or email peachblossoms.marina@meritushotels.com
